An Intro to Blu's Tutes

Holy moly! Who knew that when I first saw a morning cartoon about a girl transforming with the powers of the moon I’d still be thinking about it twenty five years later!

That the little kid fighting with the girls in my class how I didn’t want to be Sailor Mercury, no one likes Sailor Mercury!, that twenty five years later she’d still want to play imagination with these concepts and characters... and Sailor Mercury was totally badass!

That when eight year old Blu lay in bed that night, replaying that episode in her head with her supa awesome Sailor Saturn whose powers were supernovas, and later being able to turn into any Pokémon I’d still be making otaku senshi to this day!

Imagine my thrill when that twelve year old found the internet that there was a whole world of other people who did the same thing I did! The early internet was a wild, wild place full of otaku senshi! A crazy place trying scrimp episodes, read fan translations and figure out what it meant to be a Pretty Soldier.

I’m Aello Blu; old fart, Mary-Sue maker, colouring book colourist, screencap editor, fanarter, fanficcer, RPer, reviewer and above all an otaku senshi evolutionist and enthusiast, to help welcome you into the fold. Here to help you join the Otaku Senshi community with an OC uniquely yours while also fitting into the world Naoko created.

I first created this website to share the resources I've accumulated over the years all in one place... and then thought, maybe my experiences as well.... until they eventually became tutorials. This place also includes a lot of my blunders in the hopes you can avoid them too.

Each article I look at different aspects that make a Sailor Moon OC and hope to answer a lot of questions we don't always think of asking. What are the rules established by through the different canons and can you apply them to your OC? What are the patterns, who breaks the patterns and why.  What are the common tropes and clichés of making a Sailor Moon OC and what are the Mary-Sue plot holes we commonly fall into when we start up.

Also tons and tons of links to help you on your way!

One of the things that makes Sailor Moon appealing is that information is spread across various canons, and fuzzy enough there's room for interpretation. My interpretation, the Blu-Niverse if you will, says things like Helios represents the Sun in the Sol system and that there are male guardians. You can have Guardians of comets and nebulas but not constellations. Naru can't be Sailor Earth... but maybe will awaken as Sailor Haumea with her loving Knight Namaka!

When reading the canon you likely have your own interpretation and apply it to your own fan universe... a You-Niverse.

I also have to point out that my way is not the way. I like to think of this website as a series of recipes. You are more than welcome to take what you like, leave what you don’t and make the recipe to suite your own tastes. I invite everyone talk in the comments, debate your own theories and make your own senshi. My goal is to bring the thrill and joy of inserting yourself into the Sailor Moon World we love together. Create a You-Niverse and share it!

However if I am to admit a weakness its an aversion to certain recipes.

Sailor Suns, Sailor Earths and Sibling OCs are my cilantro. Ick! In twenty five years I have had every variation of them, seen the same characters rolled and rerolled. You can sprinkle them with salt, pepper, paprika; make them a redhead, a secret twin, a dark reflection... it doesn't change the basic recipe and they bore me. There is nothing you can do to not make these Sailor Moon OC characters not taste like soap in my mouth.

And so you'll see this website will try to steer you clear of them.

But if Endymion's long lost little sister Sailor Earth is your pride and joy, then live long and prosper.

The slogan of this website is Let a Thousand Starseeds Bloom. Yup, I know it is a corruption of Chairman Mao Zedong's 'Let a thousand flowers bloom.  Let a hundred schools of thought contend. I know a fascist dictator isn't a great role model but I think I can still say it with sincerity.

Just because I don't like the tropes doesn't mean your OC doesn't have value.

Sailor Bright Moon could be one you cherish twenty years later or look back on sheepishly. They could be your first step to a different OC and keep evolving. Sailor Sun may evolve into Sailor Polaris. Sailor Earth could introduce you to another group of enthusiastic creators and encourage them to create OCs, or form an RP group, which inspires more OCs! You could write a fanfic which inspires others to write their own Sailor Moon OC fic!

Moar! Moar! BWAHAHA! MOAR OTAKU SENSHI! That is all I hope for :)

Let a Thousand Starseeds Bloom!
